HISTORY Information for Zakynthos Island
In Greek Mythology, the famous poetic writer, Homer claimed that the history of the people of Zakynthos began with the arrival of the Trojan Prince Zakynthos some 1500 years BC. However, evidence of human bones was found in the bay of Laganas from the Palaeolithic Era. Zakynthos’ colourful and turbulent history has seen a succession of invaders from Athenians, Franks, Romans, Venetians, French to the British in the nineteenth century, though Zakynthos joined Greece in 1864 together with the rest of the Ionian Islands. Without ever losing its Greek identity, Zakynthos, got to know different cultures and mentalities. Zakynthos became a receiver of many cultural influences which then expounded, and as a result contributed in a great extend to the configuration of the Modern Greek spirit. Tourism first came to Zakynthos about twenty years ago and the parts of the island were transformed.
