HISTORY Information for Samos Island

The island of Samos was first inhabited in the 4th millenium BC by the Pelasgians and by the 6th century Samos had flourished significally in arts, science and naval power under the leadership of tyrant Polykratis. During that time, great monuments were constructed such as the temple of Hera (Heraion), the ancient port of Pythagorio and the Eupalineio Tunnel. After the assasination of Polykratis, Samos knew many conquerors such as the Athenians, the Spartans, the Romans, the Venetians and the Turks and little growth. It was not after hundreds of years of domination that Samos became an autonomous principality subject to the sultan (in 1834), however after constant revolutions Samos was finally liberated and united with the rest of Greece in 1912.
