The prevailing winds in the Centre of the CYCLADES Group of islands are blowing from the North and they are often quite strong. Motor yachts are sometimes stuck in port. Sailing yachts can sail away under any weather conditions and can do ex. upwind from Paros to Mykonos though a few times with difficulty. Same applies for the "leg" Santorini upwind to Iraklia/Schinoussa/Koufonissia and for this reason it is recommendable that the charter yachts stay moored in Ios island and the guests/group take the local small boat for a whole-day-trip to Santorini island. Another reason that charter yachts do not often reach Santorini is that the only docking place is Vlychada fishing village at the south coast of the island which is a very small place, with limited facilities for the yachts, about 20 min taxi ride away from Santorini town (Fira or Thira), usually without free dock space.
